Henry Chang Just Told You Exactly What's Coming — Were You Listening?
CROSS founder breaks down Mainnet 2.0, the biggest staking reward in crypto, and why this is the "last winter."
So today Henry Chang — founder of CROSS Protocol and CEO of NEXUS — jumped on a Gate.io Twitter Space for over an hour. 21.5K people tuned in. And look, most crypto AMAs are fluff. "We're excited about the future, our community is amazing, exciting things coming soon." You know the script.
This wasn't that.
Henry came in with specifics. Numbers. Timelines. Regulatory strategy. And frankly, if you're holding CROSS and you weren't listening, you might want to sit down for this one.
The Clarity Act Problem (And How He's Solving It)
Let's start with the elephant in the room. The US Clarity Act — which is looking increasingly likely to pass — has a pretty straightforward requirement: if your foundation holds more than roughly 20% of total token supply, congratulations, your "digital asset" is actually a security. Good luck with that.
CROSS foundation currently holds 65% in reserve.
Now, most projects would panic. Or ignore it. Or do some hand-wavy thing where they "commit to decentralization" while changing absolutely nothing.
Henry's approach? Give it away.
Specifically, take 60% of total supply out of the foundation reserve and redirect it entirely into block rewards for stakers and validators. No new minting. No inflation. The total supply stays at 1 billion. The foundation just... stops hoarding it.
This is where it gets interesting.
The Halving Schedule Nobody's Talking About
The block rewards follow a halving model:
Henry straight up said this is the largest staking reward he's ever seen in crypto. And he's been doing this for eight years across multiple projects. The math is simple — if you believe in this project, year one is the fattest reward you'll ever get. By design. That's the whole point of a halving schedule.
Oh, and here's the kicker: block rewards start accruing tomorrow, April 15th. Not June 1st when the actual mainnet upgrade goes live. Tomorrow. The governance vote starts tomorrow, and even if you vote against the proposal, you still earn rewards for participating.
Read that again. They're paying you to disagree with them.
Zero Minting Philosophy Meets Real Validator Economics
Here's some context that matters. CROSS has had a "Zero Minting" policy since day one. No new tokens get created. Ever. That's philosophically clean, but it created a real problem — how do you incentivize validators if there's no block reward?
Breakpoint solves this by converting the foundation's reserve into the reward pool. Validators get selected per epoch (which is one day), based on current stake amount. Retail stakers get a delegation program where longer staking = compounding rewards. The system now has actual economic incentive alignment without breaking the zero-inflation promise.
That's... actually elegant. I won't lie.
The AI Agent Play Is Bigger Than You Think
The AMA wasn't just about tokenomics. Henry spent a good chunk of time on something most people probably glossed over — the AI agent infrastructure layer.
Here's the situation: ERC-8004 is a new protocol for registering AI agents on Ethereum-compatible chains. There are currently over 200,000 agents registered across all chains. CROSS is ranked #4 with roughly 20,000 agents.
Fourth. On a chain most crypto Twitter doesn't even know exists yet.
They've already integrated Base and Circle's X402 protocol (agent-based payments) into their games. They're planning to integrate Tron's Bi.ai (AI LLM gateway). And next week they're dropping Cross Claw — their own simplified version of OpenClaw designed for non-developers.
See, this is what happens when a chain is actually building while everyone else is posting infographics about "AI x Crypto synergy." CROSS is just... doing it. Quietly. With 20,000 agents already registered and actual payment rails integrated.
Seal M: The 50x Proof of Concept
If you've been following BCGamer, you already know about Seal M. But Henry dropped some extra context today that's worth highlighting.
The game was a low performer in its Web2 version. Not a blockbuster that happened to also work on-chain. A game that was underperforming. They brought it into the CROSS ecosystem, applied the full stack — community platform, streamer tools, web shop, payment infrastructure, game homepage toolkit — and it did 50x its previous performance in three months.
Over a million users are now playing it.
That's not "we put a popular game on a blockchain and it stayed popular." That's "we took something mid and made it work through systematic Web3 infrastructure." And that's a fundamentally different story. It means the platform itself adds value, not just the individual game.
Henry was blunt about it: the WEMIX successes in 2021 and 2024 were great games that would've probably succeeded anyway. This time is different because the system made it work. Which means the next game, and the one after that, can replicate it.
More games are coming this month, next month, and the month after. His words.
"Last Winter"
When asked to define CROSS's role in this cycle in one sentence, Henry didn't pitch. He didn't hype. He said this is the "last winter."
Spring is coming, but — and he was very clear about this — not every project gets to see it. The ones that survive will be the ones that proved real value. The rest are just narrative.
And then he said something that should probably be tattooed on every crypto investor's forehead: "In the coming months, we will clearly see the distinction between who creates real value and who's just talking about rhetoric narrative."
Coming from a guy who just committed to giving away 60% of his project's treasury to holders, that line hits different.
The Bottom Line
Look, I'm not going to tell you what to do with your money. But I will tell you what I saw today:
A founder who identified a regulatory risk before it became a crisis, designed a solution that turns compliance into a holder benefit, and is putting it to a democratic vote — while still paying people who vote against him.
The governance vote starts April 15th. Mainnet 2.0 Breakpoint goes live June 1st. Block rewards accrue starting tomorrow regardless.
If you're already holding CROSS, not staking tomorrow is literally leaving money on the table. If you're not holding CROSS... well, at least now you can't say nobody told you.
21.5K people listened today. The question is how many actually heard it.
